Published 31 July 2025

Introduction

This release strategy acts as the formal notice of changes to future releases of the Access to Work official statistics publication.

The strategy describes the potential release of new statistics within the publication and announces any other developments.

The Access to Work official statistics release strategy is not a static document; it will be updated as plans develop to provide users with details of latest developments.

The development of these statistics follows the Department for Work and Pensions’ (DWP’s) Statistical work programme

Proposed developments to the statistics

We invite users to comment on proposed changes to the Access to Work official statistics ahead of the next release ‘Access to Work official statistics: April 2007 to March 2025’ which has a provisional publication date of September or October 2025. The proposed changes are:

  •  additionally include the Transitional Employer Support Grant (TESG) formerly published as part of Work Choice statistics and Access to Work Plus (AtW+) as categories for breakdowns by element

  • include figures for grant expenditure. Grant expenditure is defined as total Access to Work expenditure excluding expenditure on Holistic Assessments and the Mental Health Support Service, which are contracted elements delivered through external providers therefore funded differently to other Access to Work support

  • in addition to primary medical condition, provide a broader medical condition categorisation, such as “Musculoskeletal conditions” and “Mental Health Conditions”

  • report on the average amount received per customer across the financial year

  • provide a breakdown of Support Worker types within the Support Worker element

  • report on employment characteristics such as employer size and employment status

  • include a breakdown of Access to Work expenditure for individuals who are undergoing a Supported Internship
