Details

This research was commissioned by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) to map the current landscape of AI use within the UK’s Engineering Biology (EB) community. The study took place in June 2025 and aims to understand how AI is applied, tools that are already in use, blockers to adoption and how these technologies are viewed in terms of their utility, accessibility, and associated risks. The findings will inform future policy development and support mechanisms to ensure that the UK remains at the forefront of innovation in this critical area.

The study:

  • identifies a survey sample of the EB sector
  • maps the current landscape of AI adoption in EB
  • identifies key barriers and risks to adoption
  • gives an overview of differences in perception between users and vendors
  • highlights areas where policy intervention could accelerate equitable and effective AI integration
