We have received a request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 for the following:

In December 2011 the Home Office announced that £10million would be funded to an initial 22 local authorities to tackle gangs and youth violence. Please can I request a full methodology and list of datasets used in which to determine this funding allocation.

We released the following information on the 16th March 2012:

Two types of data were used in the selection of the 22 local areas. These were:
• Data on selected police recorded violence against the person offences and violence against the person offences involving knives or sharp instruments recorded by police forces in England and Wales and supplied to the Home Office; and
• Admissions to English NHS hospitals for assault by sharp object aged 13 to 24 (NHS Hospital Episode Statistics).
In terms of methodology, the 22 areas did not submit new information to the Home Office. The selection was undertaken by the department using the two datasets cited above. This information was supplemented with discussions with the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) and information previously submitted by areas as part of the Communities Against Guns, Gangs and Knives and Tackling Knives Action Programmes.
