The Rt Hon Tom Brake

Biography

Tom Brake became Deputy Leader of the House of Commons in October 2012 and was also appointed as an Assistant Government Whip in November 2014. He was elected the Liberal Democrat MP for Carshalton and Wallington in 1997.

Education

Tom was educated at the Lycée International School in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, near Paris, and at Imperial College London, where he obtained a BSc in physics.

Political career

Tom was elected to Parliament in 1997 and began his political career as Spokesman for the Environment, Transport and the Regions. In 2002 he became a Transport Spokesman, joining the Liberal Democrat front bench team in 2003 as the lead International Development Spokesman. After the 2005 General Election he became the Transport Spokesman. In February 2007, he was appointed as Spokesman for London and the Olympics. In 2008, he became Home Affairs Shadow Minister.

Career outside politics

Tom worked as a computer software consultant with Hoskyns (Capgemini) from 1983 until his election to Parliament. He served as a councillor in the London Borough of Hackney from 1988 to 1990.

Personal life

Tom is married with 2 children.
