Sunny Ahmed

Biography

Sunny Ahmed has been Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Kuwait since October 2021 (following an extensive period of Language training in London and Amman).

Prior to this, she was based in Washington DC, where she was Head of Partnering and Engagement at the UKHO (an agency of the Ministry of Defence). She managed engagement with 20 Foreign Government Hydrographic Offices across the Americas. Sunny was also the UKHO lead on defence engagement with the US.

Sunny joined the Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) in 2007, working in Consular Directorate after which, she served briefly in Damascus. From 2009 to 2011 Sunny returned to London working on the China Desk and as Communications Manager for the Business Engagement Group at FCDO. From 2011 to 2014, Sunny was the Deputy British High Commissioner to Brunei. She subsequently served in Manama as Head of Programmes Team, overseeing Security Sector and Justice reform programming in Bahrain (2014-2016). From 2016 to 2017 Sunny served in Baghdad.

Before joining the FCDO, Sunny worked for the National Health Service as a Specialist Case Manager (2003-2007) and was a Volunteer Co-ordinator at Barbado’s (2001-2003).

Deputy Head of Mission to Kuwait

The Deputy Head of Mission is a senior diplomat and typically a key advisor to the Ambassador or High Commissioner. The Deputy is responsible for the daily management of an overseas Embassy or High Commission. They will represent the UK’s interests in the absence of the Ambassador as Chargé d’Affaires. A senior ranking Deputy may also take the title Minister. Smaller missions may not have a Deputy Head.
