Sonia Farrey

Biography

Sonia Farrey is Ambassador and UK Permanent Representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO) in Vienna. She took up the role in early 2026. At the same time, she was also appointed as UK Governor on the Board of Governors of the IAEA.

Ms Farrey has served in a range of overseas and UK roles. She was most recently Head of the Gender and Children in Conflict Department at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office in London. Prior to that she was Political Counsellor at the UK Mission to the United Nations in New York. Other overseas postings include Belgium, Iraq, Sudan, and Arabic language training in Syria. She has worked in the FCO’s Middle East Directorate and in departments dealing with Security Policy, Counter-Terrorism and Somalia. Ms Farrey has also worked outside of government for a short period, as Director of Advocacy / Head of Policy at Unicef UK.

In 2015, Ms Farrey completed postgraduate studies in International Relations at the University of Cambridge.  She also holds a BSc in Sociology from the London School of Economics. Originally from Durham, she joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 2001.
