Sarah Riley

Biography

Sarah took up her appointment as Deputy British Ambassador to Bulgaria in September 2014. Before that she was First Secretary for Russia, Eastern Europe, the South Caucasus and Central Asia in the UK Permanent Representation to the EU in Brussels. Between 2008 and 2010, Sarah was Head of Southern Africa Section, Africa Directorate, FCO.

In 2008, she was Deputy Team Leader of the EU Lisbon Treaty Bill Team. From 2004 to 2008 Sarah was posted to the British Embassy in Warsaw as Second Secretary EU. Prior to that Sarah managed the media arrangements for international media groups covering high level incoming VIP visits.

Sarah’s Undergraduate Degree is in Politics, Sociology and French from Aston University, and her Postgraduate Degree is in International Relations from Sheffield University.

Deputy Head of Mission to Bulgaria

The Deputy Head of Mission is a senior diplomat and typically a key advisor to the Ambassador or High Commissioner. The Deputy is responsible for the daily management of an overseas Embassy or High Commission. They will represent the UK’s interests in the absence of the Ambassador as Chargé d’Affaires. A senior ranking Deputy may also take the title Minister. Smaller missions may not have a Deputy Head.
