Sarah Riley

Biography

Sarah took up her appointment as Deputy British Ambassador to Denmark in July 2022.

Prior to this appointment, she was Head of Gibraltar Policy Unit, FCDO. She has served as Deputy British Ambassador to Bulgaria from 2014 to 2018. Her previous roles include: First Secretary for Russia, Eastern Europe, the South Caucasus and Central Asia in the UK Permanent Representation to the EU in Brussels (2010 to 2014), Head of Southern Africa Section, Africa Directorate, FCDO (2008 to 2010), Deputy Team Leader of the FCDO EU Lisbon Treaty Bill Team (2008), and Second Secretary EU, British Embassy Warsaw (2004 to 2008). Prior to that Sarah managed the media arrangements for international media groups covering high level incoming VIP visits.

Sarah’s Undergraduate Degree is in Politics, Sociology and French from Aston University, and her Postgraduate Degree is in International Relations from Sheffield University.

Deputy Head of Mission to Denmark

The Deputy Head of Mission is a senior diplomat and typically a key advisor to the Ambassador or High Commissioner. The Deputy is responsible for the daily management of an overseas Embassy or High Commission. They will represent the UK’s interests in the absence of the Ambassador as Chargé d’Affaires. A senior ranking Deputy may also take the title Minister. Smaller missions may not have a Deputy Head.
