Robert Devereux rejoined the Department for Work and Pensions as Permanent Secretary on 1 January 2011, having previously spent 4 years with the Department of Social Security, and 2 years with DWP when it was first created in 2001.
Robert’s career has included time spent in:
- the Overseas Development Administration
- HM Treasury
- Guinness Brewing Worldwide, on secondment
- the Department for Transport, which he joined in 2003 and where he became Permanent Secretary in 2007
The Permanent Secretary is the head of the department, responsible for the effectiveness and efficiency of the department’s work and its spending.
They are also responsible for the leadership, management and staffing of the department.
