Pete Vowles

Biography

Pete Vowles has been the British Ambassador to Zimbabwe since October 2023. Prior to this he was the Transformation Director at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). Previously Pete was Chargé D’Affaires ad Interim at the British Embassy Yangon until July 2022. Before this he was FCDO Director for Asia, Caribbean and Overseas Territories.

Pete has served in various Posts including in Nairobi as Department for International Development (DFID) Country Director from 2016 to 2018, and in the Democratic Republic of Congo as Deputy DFID Country Director from 2010 to 2013. His other previous roles include Afghanistan, Bangladesh and India. Between 2014 and 2016 he was the Head of Programme Delivery for DFID.

Before joining government in 2006, Pete held roles in the private sector, the World Bank, a range of non-government organisations, and the UK National Health Service.

The Ambassador represents His Majesty The King and the UK government in the country to which they are appointed. They are responsible for the direction and work of the embassy and its consulates, including political work, trade and investment, press and cultural relations, and visa and consular services.
