Mike Driver

Biography

Mike was appointed as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for the Ministry of Justice on 1 April 2016. Having joined the then Department of Health & Social Security in 1979, straight from school, Mike spent his first 6 years delivering services to customers before moving into regional management and onto a range of policy and finance roles, including Director of Operations Finance. In 2012 Mike was appointed as Finance Director General at the Department of Work and Pensions and remained in that role until 31st March 2016. Mike is a Chartered Public Finance Accountant.

He leads CFO Group, which incorporates:

  • HMPPS, Operations and Group Finance
  • Commercial and Contract Management
  • Analytical Services
  • Data Driven Department & Culture Change
  • Planning, Performance, Risk & Portfolio Management

Mike is also Accountant General of the Senior Courts of England & Wales and Commissioner for the Reduction of the National Debt. He is a member of the CIPFA Council and Chair of the CIPFA Governance & Financial Management Panel.

Chief Financial Officer and Head of the Government Finance Function

Mike was appointed as Head of the Government Finance Function on 1 June 2017. This role exists to substantially strengthen the finance function’s critical role at the heart of government, ensuring better political and business outcomes.
