Mike joined the then Department of Health & Social Security in 1979, straight from school, and spent his first 6 years delivering services to customers before moving into regional management and then into a range of policy and finance roles, including including Finance Director, Jobcentre Plus. In 2012 Mike was appointed as Chief Financial Officer at the Department of Work and Pensions and remained in that role until 31 March 2016. From 1st April 2016, Mike was appointed as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for the Ministry of Justice.
Mike was also appointed as Head of the Government Finance Function on 1 June 2017. This role exists to substantially strengthen the finance function’s critical role at the heart of government, ensuring better political and business outcomes.
Mike is also the Accountant General of the Senior Courts of England & Wales and a Commissioner for the Reduction of the National Debt. He is a member of the CIPFA Council and Chair of the CIPFA Governance & Financial Management Panel.

Mike leads the CFO group at MoJ, supporting the Department in delivering its priorities of:

- global Britain and the rule of law
- a transformed Department.
