Mel Barlow
Biography
Mel Barlow became His Majesty’s High Commissioner-designate to Brunei Darussalam in September 2026.
Mel was most recently Ambassador in Laos (2023 to 2026) and Deputy Ambassador in Kathmandu (2022 to 2023). She joined the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office in 2002 and has previous postings to Tokyo (2005 to 2011) and Seoul (2015 to 2018). She has worked on foreign policy and security issues, economic and trade policy, conflict prevention and consular issues while serving in London.

The High Commissioner Designate is the UK government’s representative in a Commonwealth nation. They are responsible for the direction and work of the High Commission and its Deputy High Commissions and/or Consulates, including political work, trade and investment, press and cultural relations, and visa and consular services.
