Biography
Matthew Style was appointed Interim Second Permanent Secretary and Chief Operating Officer in March 2026.
His previous roles include:
- Director General, System Development at the Department of Health and Social Care
- Director General, Secondary Care and Integration at the Department of Health and Social Care
- Deputy Chief Finance Officer at NHS England and NHS Improvement
- Director of Local Government Finance (including adult social care) at the Department for Communities and Local Government
- Deputy Director, Public Services and Head of the Health and Social Care Team at HM Treasury
He has also served as Private Secretary to the Prime Minister.
Interim Second Permanent Secretary and Chief Operating Officer
The Interim Second Permanent Secretary and Chief Operating Officer is responsible for:
- corporate governance
- ministerial and Parliamentary support
- corporate services (such as information technology and estates) and DHSC human resources
- correspondence and contact centre
The Interim Second Permanent Secretary and Chief Operating Officer is also senior responsible officer overseeing delivery of the DHSC and NHS England transformation programme.
