Matthew Cannell became UK Special Representative for Sudan and South Sudan and Head of the Joint FCO/DFID Sudan Unit on 1 July 2014. Prior to taking up this role he served in Afghanistan as Head of the British Embassy’s joint FCO/DFID civilian programme group from 2012 to 2014. He has worked previously at the UK Mission to the United Nations in New York (2005-2009) as Private Secretary to the UK Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN and subsequently as an advisor on development issues.
He joined the civil service in 2003 and has also held a range of positions for the Department for International Development (DFID) and the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). Prior to joining the UK civil service he worked in the private sector. He holds a Masters in Business Administration and a Bachelors in Agriculture.
He is married and has a son.
