Martine Sobey

Biography
Martine is High Commissioner to Lesotho, having taken up the role in September 2025. She previously led the Climate and Nature Team at the British High Commission in Abuja, Nigeria.
Martine joined the Civil Service in 2019, with BEIS, setting up the joint International Forests Unit with the FCDO. She led on priority nature campaigns during the UK’s Presidency of COP26 in Glasgow and headed our bilateral partnerships with Amazon forest countries (Colombia, Brazil and Peru).
Prior to joining the Civil Service, she worked for environmental research and international development organisations in Africa and Europe.
Martine has a degree in Geography from the University of Cambridge and a Master’s in Environment and Politics from King’s College London.
British High Commissioner to Lesotho
The High Commissioner is the UK government’s representative in a Commonwealth nation. They are responsible for the direction and work of the High Commission and its Deputy High Commissions and/or Consulates, including political work, trade and investment, press and cultural relations, and visa and consular services.
