Mark Bryson-Richardson MBE

Biography

Mark Bryson-Richardson was appointed the Foreign Secretary’s Representative for Humanitarian Affairs in the Occupied Palestinian Territories in December 2023.

Previously Mark was the British Ambassador to Iraq from July 2021 to July 2023. Before this, Mark served as the Department for International Development/Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office Director for Middle East, North Africa and Eastern Europe from 2019 to 2020.

Mark joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1999 and has since completed a number of permanent and temporary roles including foreign diplomatic postings in Mogadishu as Deputy Head of Mission (2013), Kabul as Political Counsellor (2008 to 2010), Khartoum as Deputy Head of Mission and Head, Political and Press Sections (2003 to 2006).

Foreign Secretary’s Representative for Humanitarian Affairs in the Occupied Palestinian Territories

The Foreign Secretary’s Representative for Humanitarian Affairs in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPTs) works to improve the humanitarian situation in the OPTs. They do this in partnership with international allies and organisations, and with a particular focus on Gaza. Their work includes:

  • ensuring the effective delivery of aid
  • promoting the upholding of International Humanitarian Law and the protection of civilians
