Liane Saunders became Strategy Director and Strategic Programmes Coordinator at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in May 2017.
She has previously served in diplomatic roles in the Near and Middle East. Her London roles include leading the FCO’s counter-proliferation work and running its Crisis Centre, as well as work on the Middle East during the Arab Spring.
She returned to the FCO after 5 years in the National Security Secretariat at the Cabinet Office.
Strategy Director and Strategic Programmes Coordinator
The Director of Strategy and Strategic Programmes Coordinator is responsible for:
- policy planning: providing challenge and alternative perspectives; engaging with external organisations and thinkers on foreign policy in the UK and overseas
- improving the policy capability of the FCO
- helping to ensure FCO corporate and policy objectives are joined up, including by overseeing the deployment of staff from the Projects Task Force to priority issues
- delivering the FCO Board’s ambition for a strategic portfolio approach to delivering foreign policy through programme
