Jonathan Mills

Biography

Jonathan Mills became Director General for Labour Market Policy and Implementation in March 2021. This is one of 2 Director General roles created to replace the role of Director General Policy Group which Jonathan has held since August 2017.

Before joining DWP, Jonathan was Director of the Economic and Domestic Secretariat in the Cabinet Office, supporting the Cabinet and decision-making across government under 2 Prime Ministers.

He has previously worked in director roles in the Department of Energy and Climate Change, where he was responsible for delivering the electricity market reform programme. He spent the first part of his career in the Treasury where he worked on a wide range of public spending and growth policies and in the private office of the Chief Secretary to the Treasury.

Director General, Labour Market Policy and Implementation

The Director General for Labour Market Policy and Implementation is responsible for:

  • the development and implementation of labour market policy, including the approach to post-Covid economic recovery
  • social security coordination and welfare policy including Universal Credit
  • in-work progression and poverty strategy
