Jonathan Hargreaves

Biography

Jonathan was most recently the UK’s Special Representative for Syria, leading the UK’s efforts to promote stability and political processes in Syria.

He served in Jerusalem as Head of the UK’s development team in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, before taking on overall responsibility for UK development work in Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. On behalf of the UK Prime Minister and HM the King of Jordan he led a major economic conference on Jordan in London in 2019.  He was Head of the DFID’s department for Governance, Anti-Corruption and Open Societies.

In Nairobi he led UK’s development policy on Somalia. At the beginning of his governmental career he advised on governance programmes in the Balkans, including in Kosovo, before working on governance in DRC, Angola and Rwanda. 

Prior to joining the UK government he worked in the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs advising on European integration, as well as working for the European Commission on new relations with the former Soviet Union and eastern Europe.  His consultancy work in the private sector included influential projects on policing, local government, employment services, and court processes.

The Ambassador represents His Majesty The King and the UK government in the country to which they are appointed. They are responsible for the direction and work of the Embassy and its Consulates, including political work, trade and investment, press and cultural relations, and visa and consular services.
