Biography

John completed his BSc and PhD at Bangor University, before moving through Aberystwyth, Hanover, Paris and Wrexham to arrive several years later in the University of Chester. John recently retired from Chester, where he was Head of the School of Medicine, Associate Dean of Faculty and held a Chair in Applied Biochemistry. He has also served on the Council of Governors for Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospital Board.
As Head of the Medical School, he was responsible for the training of healthcare professionals through a number of accredited courses at BSc and MSc level. John has also been external examiner for various UK, as well as international, universities (including Aberystwyth University, Bangor University, Cardiff University, Manchester Metropolitan University, Plymouth University, University College London and Aarhus University).
John ran a research laboratory in Chester and has published over 50 scientific papers, 11 book chapters and given keynote lectures worldwide. John’s research has covered areas such as food authentication, but mainly focused on stress proteins and understanding how they are regulated and influence disease processes. John has successfully supervised over 30 PhD students, many of whom now hold senior academic positions around the world.
Outside work, John is Welsh speaking and lives in Llangwm, near Bala. He is married with three children and has a smallholding of just over 20 acres. He was a keen rugby player, and a qualified coach, but is now restricted to following the game at Clwb Rygbi Bala, and whenever possible, watching Wales.
