Gerald Howarth

Biography

Gerald Howarth was Minister for International Security Strategy from May 2010 to September 2012. He was elected Conservative MP for Aldershot on 1 May 1997.

Education

Gerald was educated at Haileybury and ISC Junior School, Windsor, Bloxham School, Banbury and the University of Southampton, where he studied English.

Political career

From 1983 to 1992 Gerald served as Conservative Member of Parliament for Cannock & Burntwood. He was elected MP for Aldershot in 1997. From 2002 to 2010 he served as a Shadow Defence Minister with responsibility for defence procurement and the Royal Air Force.

Career outside politics

After university, Gerald became General Secretary of the Society for Individual Freedom. In 1971 he began a career in international banking, working for Bank of America International Ltd between 1971 and 1977 and European Arab Bank between 1977 and 1981 before being appointed Manager, Loan Syndications at Standard Chartered Bank.

Gerald is married and has 3 children.
