Ella Southall
Biography
Ella Southall is the Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Guatemala City and Deputy Head of Mission to Honduras (non-resident).
Ella joined the UK Civil Service in 2021 and has worked across health policy, international development and foreign policy. Before taking up her current role, she worked on a range of UK government priority projects, including the International Development White Paper and preparations for the Paris 2024 and Milan-Cortina 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Prior to joining the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, Ella held policy roles in the Department of Health and Social Care, working on vaccine programmes and neurodiversity policy, and advising ministers and senior officials on health policy and public service delivery.
Ella holds an MSc in Global Health and Development from University College London and a BSc in Food Science and Nutrition from the University of Leeds.
Deputy Head of Mission, British Embassy Guatemala City
The Deputy Head of Mission is a senior diplomat and typically a key advisor to the Ambassador or High Commissioner. The Deputy is responsible for the daily management of an overseas Embassy or High Commission. They will represent the UK’s interests in the absence of the Ambassador as Chargé d’Affaires. A senior ranking Deputy may also take the title Minister. Smaller missions may not have a Deputy Head.
