Eleanor Sanders

Biography

Eleanor Sanders joined our Italy team in September 2019. During her Foreign Office career she has worked on a wide range of issues including Europe, the Middle East and former Soviet Union, security cooperation, counter-terrorism and crisis management. She has done two postings in Moscow and most recently was Head of the FCO’s Syria Unit. She has also worked in the National Security Secretariat in the Cabinet Office.

Eleanor studied history at Sheffield University and worked in the private sector before joining the Foreign Office. As well as English and Italian, she speaks Russian and Japanese.

Deputy Head of Mission, Italy

The Deputy Head of Mission is a senior diplomat and typically a key advisor to the Ambassador or High Commissioner. The Deputy is responsible for the daily management of an overseas Embassy or High Commission. They will represent the UK’s interests in the absence of the Ambassador as Chargé d’Affaires. A senior ranking Deputy may also take the title Minister. Smaller missions may not have a Deputy Head.
