Edward Stevens

Biography

Edward Stevens is a career diplomat who took up his role as British Ambassador to Costa Rica and non-resident Ambassador to Nicaragua in 2026.

Before arriving in Costa Rica, Edward worked in the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s Europe Group in London on a number of roles, including the 2024 European Political Community Summit. Prior to that, he completed a Master’s degree in EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies at the College of Europe in Bruges.

Edward has significant overseas experience. From 2019 to 2022 he served in Kathmandu as Deputy Head of Mission. Earlier in his career he was posted to Kinshasa as Consul and Second Secretary (Political and Prosperity), and spent time in Brussels as a Seconded National Expert at the European Commission working on human development and migration.

In London, Edward has held a number of policy roles across government, including in the Department for Exiting the European Union, where he worked on the UK’s future security partnership with the EU, and in the Cabinet Office on migration and EU asylum cooperation. He has also worked on EU institutions and treaty legislation in the Foreign Office.

Edward joined the Civil Service Fast Stream in 2006 and began his career in the Department for Education, where he worked on education and skills policy and support for early years and learners with learning difficulties.

The Ambassador represents His Majesty The King and the UK government in the country to which they are appointed. They are responsible for the direction and work of the Embassy and its Consulates, including political work, trade and investment, press and cultural relations and consular services.
