Debbie Alder

Biography

Debbie took on the expanded role of Director General People and Capability in April 2019 having been Director General of Human Resources since January 2014.

Before joining the Civil Service she served 21 years in the private sector in a variety of HR roles in the UK and abroad across retail, manufacturing and consultancy.

Debbie chairs the Civil Service HR Capability Board. She is a Trustee of the Whitehall and Industry Group, and a Steering Group member of Movement to Work.

Director General, People and Capability

The Director General, People and Capability, sets and leads the department’s people strategy aligning this to business strategy and the wider Civil Service workforce plan. The role is accountable for:

  • the full HR operating model and function
  • health and safety
  • all learning and development
  • workforce resourcing
  • sponsorship of major people transformation programmes
  • creating a flexible, inclusive and continuously learning workforce
