Biography
David Wallace has been Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy Berlin since August 2026.
David has a diplomatic career spanning over twenty years during which he has covered a range of political, economic and security roles, focused in Europe and Asia. He was most recently Deputy High Commissioner to Malaysia from July 2022 to July 2026. This included a period as Acting High Commissioner (Chargé d’Affaires) from August 2024 to April 2025, during which time Malaysia and the UK upgraded relations to a Strategic Partnership.
From 2017 to 2022 he was Political Counsellor at the British Embassy in Berlin, where he built up co-operation with Germany on foreign, security and development issues. Previously he has served as Political Counsellor in Warsaw, Head of Economic Section in Seoul and as a diplomatic adviser in Baghdad. In the Foreign Office Head Office he has worked on sanctions, counter proliferation, Iraq and Afghanistan.
David has a BA (Hons) in Philosophy and an MA in International Economics. He speaks English and German.
Deputy Head of Mission, Germany
The Deputy Head of Mission is a senior diplomat and typically a key advisor to the Ambassador or High Commissioner. The Deputy is responsible for the daily management of an overseas Embassy or High Commission. They will represent the UK’s interests in the absence of the Ambassador as Chargé d’Affaires. A senior ranking Deputy may also take the title Minister. Smaller missions may not have a Deputy Head.
