The Rt Hon David Evennett MP

Biography

David Evennett was Government Whip (Lord Commissioner of HM Treasury) between 7 September 2022 and 27 October 2022.

He was Assistant Government Whip between 8 July 2022 and 7 September 2022 and he was previously Government Whip from September 2012.

He was elected the Conservative MP for Bexleyheath and Crayford in May 2005, and previously served as the Conservative MP for Erith and Crayford from 1983 to 1997.

Education

David was educated at Buckhurst Hill County High School and the London School of Economics, where he was awarded an MSc in Economics.

Political Career

David joined the Education and Science Select Committee in 1986 and, following the 1992 General Election, he was appointed the Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to the Minister of State at the Department for Education, Emily Blatch.

In 1993 he became the PPS to the Secretary of State for Wales John Redwood until 1995 when he was the PPS to the Home Office minister David Maclean, and then to Gillian Shephard the Secretary of State for Education and Skills in 1996. He was appointed Opposition Whip in 2005; Shadow Minister for Innovations, Universities and Skills in 2009; PPS to Michael Gove, Secretary of State for Education, in 2010, and a Government Whip in 2012.

Career outside politics

David began his career as a teacher in 1972 at Ilford County High School. He served as a Councillor for the London Borough of Redbridge between 1974 and 1978. From 1974 to 1981 he was also a marine insurance broker at Lloyd’s, and subsequently a Director of an underwriting agency. He was a lecturer in management for Bexley College from 1997 to 2001, and a freelance lecturer from 2001 to 2005.

Personal life

David is married and has 2 sons and 2 grandchildren.
