Bas Javid

Biography

Bas was appointed Director General for Immigration Enforcement at the Home Office in November 2023, following a long and varied career in public service.

Born to Pakistani immigrants, he was raised in several locations across the UK and speaks a number of languages.

Bas joined the Royal Navy in March 1988 as a helicopter engineer and served during Operation Desert Storm in 1991.

He joined Avon and Somerset Police in November 1993 and held a number of operational leadership roles during his policing career, including detective chief inspector in Coventry, superintendent in Sandwell and chief superintendent in Solihull.

He later joined the Metropolitan Police Service, where he served as Commander for Frontline Policing in London before becoming Deputy Assistant Commissioner for Professionalism from March 2021 to November 2023.

Bas has studied criminology and has made academic contributions to the field.

He has also served on the Board of Governors at Sandwell College.

Outside of work, his interests include motorcycling, aviation, exercise and cooking.

Director General, Immigration Enforcement

The Director General for Immigration Enforcement is responsible for:

  • leading a workforce of approximately 7,200 staff, including a uniformed frontline enforcement capability, and managing an annual budget of around £1.2 billion

  • developing and delivering complex operational programmes to disrupt the criminal gangs that facilitate illegal immigration and exploit vulnerable people

  • tackling illegal migration, removing those with no right to remain in the UK and protecting vulnerable individuals

  • leading teams of immigration officers, criminal investigators and financial investigators, working to tackle organised immigration crime, illegal working and the sale of smuggled goods

  • ensuring the operational effectiveness of casework teams responsible for removing individuals with no right to remain in the UK, including the deportation of foreign national offenders

  • overseeing the immigration detention estate and the escorting contracts delivered through commercial partners

  • delivering the compliant environment, a range of measures designed to prevent those without lawful status from accessing work, benefits and services

  • contributing to cross-departmental governance as Chair of the Home Office People Committee and as a member of the Home Office Executive Committee (ExCo) and other senior governance forums
