Anthony Preston

Biography

Anthony took up his post as HM Consul-General to Chongqing and South West China in August 2023.

Anthony joined the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (now Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office) in 2002.

His previous overseas postings have included:

2005 to 2008: British Embassy Jakarta, Indonesia: 3rd Secretary Climate change and economic governance

2010 to 2013: British Embassy Tokyo, Japan: Head of Media & Communications

2013 to 2016: British Embassy Yangon, Myanmar: Head of Prosperity and Economic Governance

2019 to 2022: British Consulate General, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: Deputy Consul-General

He has also worked outside of the UK’s diplomatic service, including on election governance, journalism, as well as an English teacher in China. His areas of expertise include climate & energy, economic and development work, and strategic communications.

Consul-General in Chongqing

The Consul General is the senior UK official in a Consulate General, which is a subordinate office to the Embassy or High Commission, usually located in another major city. The Consul General represents the UK government and is typically responsible for consular, visa and trade activities in their city or region.
