Professor Anthony Fooks OBE

Biography
Tony was appointed Animal and Plant Science Director in July 2026.
He has held various roles in APHA since joining the agency in 2000, including Head of Virology and Lead Scientist for International Development and Global Science Strategy.
Before joining APHA, Tony worked in the public health sector. His career in government remains focused on life sciences and Tony is a Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Health and Medical Science, University of Surrey.
In 2024, Tony was awarded an OBE in the King’s Birthday Honours List for his services to animal health and welfare.
Animal and Plant Science Director
This director is responsible for:
- the operational delivery of science and research in APHA
- the quality and integrity of APHA’s scientific services
- making sure that the scientific perspective is part of the decision-making in APHA
