Andrew Nethercott

Biography

Andrew Nethercott is the British High Commissioner to the Independent State of Samoa. He took up his appointment in May 2026.  

He previously served as Deputy Head of the Central Asia and Eastern Neighbourhood Department.  Prior to that he was Political Counsellor in Ghana.  Andy joined the Department for International Development Fast Stream in 2009, covering humanitarian and multilateral policy issues in London, followed by overseas postings to Pretoria and Islamabad.  During a five-year stint outside government, Andy worked for the International Committee of the Red Cross in eastern Ukraine and southeastern Afghanistan, and for the London-based peacebuilding charity Conciliation Resources.  

Andy studied Russian and East European Studies at the Universities of Birmingham, St Petersburg, and Oxford.  He is married to Madeleine and they have three children.

The High Commissioner is the UK government’s representative in a Commonwealth nation. They are responsible for the direction and work of the High Commission and its Deputy High Commissions and/or Consulates, including political work, trade and investment, press and cultural relations, and visa and consular services.
