Alba Smeriglio
Biography
Alba Smeriglio took up her appointment as the British Deputy High Commissioner Chandigarh in December 2025. She represents the UK in the four Indian states of Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Uttarakhand, and the Union Territory of Chandigarh.
Alba is a diplomat with a range of experience in roles overseas and in London. Her previous postings include Montserrat as Head of Programmes and Office, and other positions in the Caribbean and in South Asia.
In London she has worked on a range of policy areas focused on growth, democratic governance, security cooperation and human rights.
Alba holds a BSc in International Development from the London School of Economics and Political Science, an MA from the University of Aberdeen, and a postgraduate degree in politics from the University of Siena.
British Deputy High Commissioner Chandigarh
In some countries, the Deputy High Commissioner leads a subordinate office to the High Commission in another major city. The Deputy High Commissioner fulfils a similar role to a Consul General, representing the UK government and typically responsible for consular, visa and trade activities in their city or region.
