About us

What we do

The Technical Advisory Board (TAB) advises the Home Secretary on whether the obligations imposed on communications service providers (CSPs) under the terms of Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA) are reasonable.

Responsibilities

We advise on the obligations placed on CSPs, including:

  • the obligation to maintain interception capability (stated in Section 12 of the RIPA)
  • the obligations and exemptions listed on the RIPA (Maintenance of Interception Capability) Order 2002

Most companies will receive a notice listing their obligations under the law, and giving them a date by which those obligations must be carried out.

We manage appeals from CSPs on notices they consider unreasonable under section 12 of RIPA, and advise the Home Secretary on each case.
