The OIPC also provides a platform for you to share feedback, concerns and complaints about how the Prevent programme is delivered. This function complements existing assurance and complaints processes in specific sectors.
The OIPC works across England, Wales and Scotland.
Our mission
The OIPC supports the Independent Prevent Commissioner to provide independent oversight of Prevent by:
- offering an independent platform to share feedback, concerns and complaints about the Prevent programme
- reviewing how effectively the Prevent programme meets its objectives
- providing a clearer and longer‑term understanding of how Prevent works
Our approach
We focus on:
- spotting issues early: we look at concerns from different areas to see where things aren’t working well
- reviewing big problems: we investigate common issues that keep coming up across multiple organisations
- improving policy: we share what we learn with government so they can make better decisions
- public engagement: we build trust by involving communities in honest, inclusive conversations
Our independence
The Commissioner is a public appointee of the Home Office and operates independently from government, supported by a team of civil servants that form the OIPC. This independence allows the Commissioner to:
- analyse issues objectively and impartially
- provide honest assessments of how effective the programme is
- make recommendations based on evidence without political influence
When instructed by the Home Secretary or Home Office ministers, the OIPC can support Commissioner-led investigations into wider problems with how Prevent is delivered, and can oversee and check the quality of Prevent learning reviews.
