Equality and diversity

Natural England’s equality and diversity policies and how equality and diversity are monitored.

Our commitment

Natural England is committed to contributing to the achievement of a strong, healthy and just society. We promote personal well-being, social cohesion and inclusion, and creating equal opportunity for people in existing and future communities.

What we are doing

Natural England’s equality and diversity policies and procedures comply with the law and any duties required of public sector organisations. We ensure they are practiced in ways which foster an inclusive work and service environment where each person feels respected, valued and understood, whatever their diversity.

We use equality impact assessments (EqIAs) as a tool to ensure that equality, social inclusion and community cohesion issues are considered when drawing up policies or proposals which affect the delivery of services, development of policies or the running of projects. EqIAs help to measure whether policies will have a negative, neutral, or positive effect on different communities, and to identify potential improvements to services. For an example see recruitment selection (PDF, 168 KB, 5 pages).

Equality and diversity data

Natural England monitors and publishes information on its workforce's protected characteristics (PDF, 887 KB, 39 pages): age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation. This helps us to:

  • understand the potential impact of our policies, practices and services on our people
  • identify the priority areas where we need to focus our attention
