The Independent Medical Expert Group advises the Minister for Defence Person and Veterans on medical and scientific aspects of Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS) and related matters.


Who we are

We comprise of a Chair and 7 members who are senior licensed medical consultants drawn from relevant specialities, including trauma/orthopaedics, neurology, audio vestibular/audiological medicine, occupational medicine and mental health.

The group also includes a member representing the ex-service organisations and 3 ex officio members: the Chief of Defence People’s Medical Adviser; a service representative who sits on the Central Advisory Committee on Pensions and Compensation (CAC); and an injured serving person who has claimed under the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS).

Responsibilities

We are responsible for:

  • investigating the issues on which advice is requested
  • reaching conclusions and making recommendations based on evidence
  • providing evidence comprising independent, published, peer-reviewed scientific and medical literature
  • consulting other experts and inviting interested parties to submit relevant research (but IMEG does not commission research)
