An inquest into his death began on 10 November 2014, and concluded on 16 December 2014. The jury found that Alex Kelly had taken his own life.

A YJB spokesperson said:

The death of any child or young person is a tragedy and we sympathise with Alex’s family at their loss. We note the jury’s findings and await the Coroner’s Regulation 28 report, which will be published in due course. In the meantime, we will continue to seek to further improve the safety of, and treatment received by, children and young people whilst in custody.
