The UK has begun a strategic partnership with the World Bank to end global poverty, International Development Secretary Justine Greening announced during a visit by the World Bank Group President.

Ms. Greening welcomed Dr. Jim Yong Kim to the Department for International Development’s Whitehall office during his official visit to the UK.

International Development Secretary Justine Greening said:

The World Bank has lifted millions out of poverty and its expertise is creating a more prosperous and secure world for us all. They are a vital ally in our fight against global poverty.

Dr. Kim’s leadership is making the World Bank more efficient and better able to help countries to end their reliance on aid.

Just as the UK has done, moving more staff onto the frontline, becoming more transparent and driving down back office costs will ensure the World Bank maintains its leading role.

Published in December 2013, the Department for International Development’s latest Multilateral Aid Review rated the World Bank’s International Development Association as very good value for money and making reasonable progress against the UK’s priorities.
