Update: - M180 one lane open eastbound
The Highways Agency has this morning opened one lane eastbound on the M180 between junctions 2 and 3.
Drivers are still being advised to avoid the eastbound M180 today as there are some delays on the M180 and A18 due to the on-going carriageway reconstruction work taking place.
The Agency’s contractors are continuing to work around the clock to fully open the motorway by 6am on Monday morning. Drivers should follow the road signs and use alternative routes to avoid queuing in traffic. Tolls have been suspended on the Humber Bridge, which forms part of the diversion route. The suspension will remain in place until midnight on Monday 11 August.
Highways Agency spokesperson Chris Holehouse said:
This morning we have seen much reduced delays around the M180 and A18. However, there are still two lanes closed on the M180 and we advise people who can take alternative routes to the east coast to do so.
We have been working hard to revise the work schedule to alleviate the delays experienced over the past two days and our contractors have worked round the clock to get one lane open this morning.
Overhead motorway messaging signs have been set across the region on the A1, A1(M), M62, M1 and M18 warning of possible delays. Those travelling from the south should consider using the A46 and A15.
There is an alternative diversion route signed from the A1 at Blyth and Wadworth warning the M180 closure and advising drivers heading to Grimsby to use A641 / A631 and A15. Those travelling from the north can use the M62 and A63 to the east coast.
The overnight work planned to take place from 11 to 15 August on the westbound carriageway between junctions 3 and 4 will go ahead as planned. The 24 hour closures planned for 15 to 20 August on the westbound carriageway between junction 3 and 2 will now be reassessed and re-planned to ensure any closures which do take place will not cause the levels of delay experienced over the past two days. Details of this re planned work will be made available shortly.
The work taking place on the M180 is essential carriageway reconstruction work. It requires deep excavations and repairs to the concrete foundation of the motorway. The concrete needs time to cure and then tarmac must be laid on top, which need to cool before traffic can run on it.
