The UK welcomes Romania’s commitment to the UPR. We welcome efforts to improve prison conditions, by adopting the national strategy on developing the judiciary system and ensuring adequate detention conditions.

We welcome Romania’s ratification of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence and we look forward to full and timely implementation of its provisions.

We encourage more action on the rights of LGBT persons, including state procedures for legal gender recognition for transgender people, and provision of adequate health care for people infected with HIV/AIDS and TB.

We recommend:

  1. Intensifying efforts to combat modern slavery by protecting the rights of victims, including their right to anonymity, and to provide assistance to victims including, where appropriate, shelter, counselling and a 24/7 hotline.

  2. Adopting an open, merit-based process when selecting national candidates for UN Treaty Body elections.

  3. Adopting legislation that reflects the provisions of the CoE Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, and adequately protects and assists victims through specialised services.
