Following the FCO Chief Scientific Adviser’s visit to Madrid in May 2013, and the presentation of the PM’s Dementia Challenge, SIN Spain worked together with UKTI and the Embassy in Madrid to host a bilateral conference on 18 March on the Dementia Challenge.

The event brought together policy makers, researchers, industry, carers and associations. A panel discussion focused on the three pillars of the PM’s Dementia Challenge. The UK was represented by the Department of Health, Medical Research Council, Alzheimer UK, IXICO, BUPA and the Life Science International Organisation.

The event received press coverage in regions beyond Madrid and in the national medical sector press. With live streaming and live tweeting, the conference also reached over 55,000 listeners through Radio Alzheimer. The conference has led to an offer for a 40 minute radio program dedicated exclusively to the UK strategy, providing an opportunity to further influence the development of Spain’s approach to dementia. Moreover, we are now working on a series of concrete outcomes which are likely to cover the following areas:

  • A pilot project at The University Hospital La Paz for an innovative reporting software to detect Alzheimer in MRI scans
  • The potential to create “Dementia Friendly Consulates” via focused training on dementia from Alzheimer UK
