UK response to US EPA Clean Power Plan proposals
US Environmental Protection Agency has released the Clean Power Plan proposal.
The US Environmental Protection Agency has today 2nd June released the Clean Power Plan proposal, which for the first time cuts carbon pollution from existing power plants, the single largest source of carbon pollution in the United States. Among the measures is the proposal that by 2030, the US will cut carbon emission from the power sector by 30% nationwide below 2005 levels.
Ed Davey, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, said:
“This is a significant move by the Obama administration. National efforts are crucial in fighting climate change, and in the UK we’ve successfully cut industrial emissions, particularly from the power sector.
“We must strive to get all nations to rise to the urgency of the climate challenge. That way there’s a real chance the world can sign up to a new global climate deal in Paris next year. These US proposals have come at a crucial time, and could shift the global debate.”
