Eugenie’s scholarship

I am currently studying Business on the International Foundation Programme at Middlesex University Mauritius. I found out about the scholarship through the British government’s website and social media. The scholarship has opened the door to courses which would otherwise be beyond my reach and is helping me secure a qualification that is both internationally recognised and locally acclaimed. Studying at Middlesex University Mauritius is also enabling me to interact and share knowledge gained in the classroom with my fellow students.

Life on campus at Middlesex University Mauritius

Life on campus is exciting. There are ample opportunities to meet with people from a range of backgrounds, viewpoints, and experiences. Students are able to speak to lecturers and wellbeing assistants, and access online help if required.

With English being the spoken language, studying at Middlesex University Mauritius I’m able to practice my English in an immersive and interactive environment.

Why education is important for the Chagossian community

Education helps people understand the world around them and coupled with tolerance and open-mindedness, can provide the building blocks and equip people to support their community.

Eugenie’s plans for the future

I would like to use my time at Middlesex University Mauritius as a stepping-stone to undertaking further studies in the UK. After completing my studies, I would like to pursue a career in business, either working in one or starting my own venture. My goal is to contribute, help, encourage and lead Chagossians to educational success in order to improve the quality of life of the Chagossian community through access to education. For example, setting up accessible and suitable training programs, especially for the younger generation aiming for a brighter future, will help Chagossians avoid facing the same struggles as have been endured by previous generations of the community.

How the scholarship scheme is supporting Eugenie’s career plans

Since beginning my studies at Middlesex University Mauritius, I have gained knowledge, skills and experience which will help me in my future career plans and in life in general. I have also increased my confidence through gaining additional skills in communication, critical thinking, problem solving, time management, and goal setting.

Eugenie’s advice to other Chagossians thinking about applying to the scheme

The scholarship allows Chagossian students to access a wide range of courses at Middlesex University Mauritius. All the courses on offer provide a great opportunity for Chagossians seeking self-improvement and to be a positive force in their community. I hope that others apply for the scholarship and access the same opportunities I’ve had.
