On Wednesday 24 June, a group of more than 50 from the British Embassy in Dubai, including Her Majesty’s Consul General, Edward Hobart, enjoyed a Ramadan iftar at the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding in the historical Al Fahidi district of Dubai.

The group were introduced to traditional Emirati dishes during the iftar before they visited a local mosque and witnessed the Call to Prayer performed live. The Emirati hosts from the Cultural Centre gave an interesting and insightful explanation of Emirati and Islamic traditions and cultures and fielded questions on everything from traditional attire to fasting during Ramadan.

After the visit, Her Majesty’s Consul General, Edward Hobart said:

The Embassy’s staff have been coming to the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding during Ramadan for a few years. We enjoy learning even more about the UAE’s culture and traditions. And our hosts always do an excellent job of addressing so many of the misconceptions about both Emirati and Islamic practices and traditions in an engaging and positive way. We are grateful to the Centre and leave more informed and with much to reflect on during the holy month of Ramadan.
