UK calls for respect for human rights in Burundi
The UK is concerned by reports over the past few days that the Burundian authorities have acted in a way that is inconsistent with the principles Burundi has signed up to in the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance.
We call for all private radio stations to be allowed to resume live broadcasts across the country, provided they adhere to professional standards and broadcast responsibly.
All human rights defenders must be free to carry out legitimate and peaceful activities in defence of human rights. All human rights defenders who have been detained must either be released or dealt with in full accordance with international judicial standards.
The UK further calls on the Government of Burundi to respect the rights of Burundian citizens to protest peacefully, and for the police to exercise restraint. A credible, independent investigation into the deaths which have occurred during demonstrations should be conducted as soon as possible. We continue to appeal to all parties for calm.
