Press release

Two overnight closures on the A46 Coventry Eastern Bypass

Road users are advised of two overnight carriageway closures next week. These are required as part of the Highways Agency’s £106 million investment to improve the A45/A46 Tollbar End roundabout and A45 Stonebridge Highway and Stivichall Junction.

The two mile section of the A46 Coventry eastern bypass, northbound from Tollbar roundabout towards the ‘TGI’ Island, will be closed for two nights, from 8pm until 6am on both Tuesday 11 November and Wednesday 12 November. One lane of the southbound carriageway will also be closed at the same time to provide an adequate safety zone to protect the workforce.

Project Manager for the Highways Agency, Paul Nagra, said:

This essential work can only be done safely by closing the carriageway. Although the work is taking place on the northbound carriageway, we need to also close one lane of the southbound carriageway in order to ensure the safety of the workforce. As there is less traffic overnight, we’ll be doing the closures then, but we still advise motorists to allow extra time for their journeys on these dates. The diversion routes may be unfamiliar to some drivers so we urge them to take extra care, and to drive safely.

The closures are to allow switching of the A46 northbound traffic - currently using the old southbound carriageway - onto the newly completed A46 Coventry eastern bypass northbound slip road.

Following the traffic switch, work will begin on the new Tollbar Island eastern bridge and underpass.

During the overnight closures road users will be diverted off Tollbar roundabout and onto the B4110 London Road until the ‘Asda’ roundabout, and turn right onto the A4082, Allard Way, the A428 Binley Road, and re-join the route at the ‘TGI’ Island - where the diversion ends.

When completed, the Tollbar scheme will improve capacity, journey times and safety. Around 45 percent of traffic will be taken from the Tollbar roundabout onto the new underpass. Access to local businesses and Coventry Airport will also be improved, as will pedestrian access at the roundabout.
