Traffic restrictions amended to improve journeys at Middle Engine Lane, North Tyneside

Major bridge work began at Middle Engine Lane Bridge in the Silverlink and Battle Hill areas of North Tyneside on Monday (20 April).

Highways England is carrying out essential maintenance and strengthening work at the bridge which carries the A19 over Middle Engine Lane.

Following delays in the area Highways England has, in agreement with North Tyneside Council, today amended the traffic management under the A19 bridge.

Highways England project manager Michael Hoult said:

Two-way temporary traffic lights are now in operation at Middle Engine Lane and the route is now open to all vehicles in both directions. The traffic lights are necessary as one lane underneath the bridge must remain closed in order to provide a safe working space whilst the essential work is carried out.

We have also increased the number of signs in the area warning drivers of delays and advising drivers to use alternative routes. In addition to this, during peak periods the traffic lights will be manned so they give priority to eastbound traffic from Battle Hill to Cobalt in the morning and westbound traffic in the afternoons.
