The UK condemns the attacks on the civilian population of Beni in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

The United Kingdom condemns the attacks on the civilian population of Beni territory, North Kivu that have left almost 200 dead since mid-October. We offer our deepest condolences to the families of the victims of this horrific violence. We call on the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to investigate these attacks thoroughly and promptly in order to hold those responsible to account. The Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) and the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) must intensify their efforts to protect the civilian population and eradicate all illegal armed groups in eastern Congo in accordance with Security Council resolution 2147.

We are also concerned by attacks on UN peacekeepers from MONUSCO, who must be allowed to carry out their mandate in Security Council resolution 2147 (2014).

The United Kingdom will continue to support the government and the people of the DRC, working with the United Nations, in their efforts to consolidate peace, security, and stability throughout the country.
