The British Embassy in Luanda held a celebration for Her Majesty the Queen’s birthday on 26 June 2013. Over 400 guests attended including representatives from the Angolan Government, Angolan civil society, business representatives, and the Angolan media.

Mr Simmonds, UK Minister for Africa, who spoke at the event highlighted the UK and Angola’s strengthening relationship, and the importance of Angola to the UK - In the first quarter of 2013, Angola was the UK’s 4th largest bi-lateral trade partner in Sub-Saharan Africa, and in 2012 the UK was the second largest overseas investor in Angola.

But he emphasised that this was not solely a result of significant investments in Angola by UK Oil and Gas companies but pointed also to the growing links and partnership being pursued in other more diverse fields such as education, financial services, and even the music industry. An example of this was Angolan musician Waldemar Bastos (pictured above with the Ambassador), whose latest album includes a very successful partnership with the London Symphony Orchestra.
