UK hands over aviation security equipment to South African aviation industry
Hand over of aviation security equipment at OR Tambo airport
The UK Department for Transport (DfT) this week formally handed over aviation security equipment to Swissport and South African Airlines (SAA) at OR Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg for use in cargo.
The equipment included: 2 state of the art ‘Explosive Trace Detection’ (ETD) machines and consumables that will assist in broadening aviation security detection capability at the airport’s cargo warehouses. Both Swissport (British Airways and Virgin Atlantic) and SAA, who fly cargo direct to the UK daily, also received an intensive week of training on the ETD machines from DfT trainers: 24-28 March, along with staff from the South African Civil Aviation Authority.
The DfT Regional Aviation Security Liaison Officer, Vicky Hutchinson, who handed over the equipment commented that: “Terrorism is a global threat and the UK Government is keen to continue its close working relationship with South Africa on aviation security”
