Public consultation announced for major A30 dual carriageway investment in Cornwall
Residents are urged to have their say on the A30 Chiverton to Carland Cross improvement scheme in Cornwall during a series of consultation events this month.
A consultation is being held on plans to transform the single carriageway between Chiverton Cross and Carland Cross – one of the last bottlenecks in Cornwall – into a dual carriageway.
The improvement to the 8.7-mile stretch is part of a £2 billion package to turn the A303/A30A358 corridor into an expressway to the south west.
The upgrade of the Temple to Higher Carblake section of the A30 is due to be completed in spring 2017 and by improving the A30 between Chiverton and Carland Cross, Highways England will be working in partnership with Cornwall Council on a second joint project as part of the Government’s £15 billion investment into roads.
Andrew Page-Dove, Highways England’s South West Regional Director, said:
We are delivering the biggest investment in our roads in a generation.
Improving this stretch of the A30 is vital to improving motorists’ journeys, cutting congestion and helping unlock economic growth.
The European Regional Development Fund is contributing £8 million to the £280 million scheme, which is also supported by Cornwall Council.
Nigel Blackler, Head of Cornwall Council’s Strategy, Economy, Enterprise and Environment Directorate, added:
We welcome this scheme as it will help to improve journey times for both residents, businesses and visitors. We know from asking the public during the engagement exercise in March last year that there is already strong support to improve this stretch of the A30.
We hope that people will take part in this next stage where they can view, discuss and help influence the proposals so that a preferred route can be progressed. We will continue to work in partnership in Highways England on this scheme and look forward to construction starting in early 2020.
The consultation runs between 15 October and 25 November.
Public exhibitions will be staged at the following locations:
- St Erme Community Centre, Trispen on Saturday, 15 October (10am-5pm)
- Shortlanesend Village Hall on Wednesday, 19 October (10am-8pm)
- Blackwater Primary School on Thursday, 20 October (4.30pm-8pm).
The consultation will be supported online and at information points at Truro, St Agnes and Perranporth libraries and Cornwall Council’s County Hall at Truro.
Following the consultation, the preferred route will be revealed next spring.
